This release is a selection of the best electrically-recorded "amanes" performances by the legendary "nightingale of Smyrna"—Kostas Nouros.
Born on the island of Kythira in 1892 under the name Konstantinos Masselos, he became better known under the pseudonym "Nouros", a word derived from Kurdish, meaning "fire." His family emigrated to Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey) while he was still an infant and at age two he was orphaned of his mother. Nouros's father never remarried, so he was brought up by a neighbour who tended a cemetery opposite his home. As a child he took great interest in Greek Orthodox chanting and sang with other cantors at local churches in Smyrna.
The years between 1911 to 1922 were turbulent for Nouros. Although he established a career as a singer during this time, he lived through the death of his first wife and had to flee Smyrna as a refugee during the Asia Minor catastrophe. From 1926-1934 he sang on over 75 recordings made in Athens and attracted large crowds wherever he performed. In what would be another great tragedy in his life, in 1937 his second-wife's daughter died at the age of seventeen.
With the onset of the Second World War, Nouros joined the army as an entertainer and escaped the Nazi occupation of Greece by travelling to the Middle East.
By 1946, Nouros was back in Greece and would continue to perform live in various musical venues in Piraeus up until 1962, when he decided to stop singing and live off a meagre pension. He lived out his final years at his impoverished home on 33 Grevenon St street in what is today the suburb of Nikaia. The final weeks of his life were spent in a squalid old age home, where he was in much pain, taking his final breath on May 26, 1972.
To quote the title of a recent theatrical production about his life, Nouros was "twice a stranger", being both a refugee and a man who loved and lived with other men. Given this fact about his life, the lyrics to Nouros's amanedes on this album take on a special poignancy. With a voice leaden with pain and pathos, Nouros's recordings also speak to contemporary queers about the experience of being marginalised and shunned because of who they love.
